Texas - The state already holds the grim title of being the most deadly in the nation when it comes to crashes involving 18-wheelers. Now, a new and deeply troubling proposal is gaining traction behind closed doors—one that could make it even harder for Texans to seek justice in the event of a life-altering crash. A proposed Senate bill, pushed by insurance company lobbyists, would severely limit damages for victims involved in crashes with 18-wheelers, further tipping the scales in favor of insurance companies at the expense of Texans’ rights.
This latest attempt is just one of many by powerful lobbyists to reduce Texans’ rights in favor of protecting corporations. In the past, lobbyists have managed to push through legislation that severely restricted Texans' workers' compensation rights, with the promise that insurance rates would drop. However, the promised rate reductions never materialized.
Similarly, in medical malpractice cases, "tort reform" measures were passed, capping claims for severe medical mistakes—such as amputating the wrong leg—to just $250,000, no matter the extent of the harm done.
For most Texans, these changes were enacted under the radar. They didn’t know about these insurance company-sponsored laws until they were personally affected—whether through an accident, injury, or the tragic loss of a loved one. And now, this proposed Senate bill SB 30 threatens to further limit access to justice for victims of 18-wheeler accidents—without any guarantee that insurance rates will actually decrease.
It is time for Texans to stand up and say enough is enough. The only people benefiting from these laws are the powerful insurance companies who are eager to cut their payouts, while ordinary Texans bear the brunt of the consequences. If you care about your rights—and the rights of your fellow Texans—now is the time to take action.
